The meeting precedes the fourth meeting of the Tripartite Council of Ministers that is scheduled to take place on October 30 and 31 2016 in Nairobi, Kenya. The Committee was briefed by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on the ratification of the Agreement establishing a Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) amongst the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The African Free Trade Zone announced at the EAC-SADC-COMESA Summit (also known the AFTZ Summit and Tripartite Summit) effectively is the realization of a dream more than a hundred years in the making, a trade zone spanning the length of African continent from Cape to Cairo, from North African Egypt all the way to the southernmost tip of Africa in South Africa .
